Changes Are Coming to Your Child’s School

Based on a growing body of research into the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine products and excessive mobile device use, all students are required to follow the updated Provincial Code of Conduct starting September 3, 2024.

Students cannot bring electronic cigarettes (vapes), tobacco and/or nicotine products to school (including onboard student transportation).

If a student is in possession of an electronic cigarette, tobacco or nicotine product, it will be surrendered and disposed of and families will be immediately informed.

The Smoke-Free Ontario Act (2017) prohibits smoking (tobacco and cannabis) and the use of electronic cigarettes at schools, on school grounds and all public areas within 20 meters of these grounds.  Anyone smoking or vaping on school property is guilty of an offence and, if convicted, may result in a fine under the Act.

Resources to Stop Smoking or Vaping

If your child smokes or vapes, help is available to quit. The Quash App is a great place to start.

If your child does not smoke or vape, it is still important to have conversations about why they should not start.

This fact sheet by Drug Free Kids Canada includes valuable ideas on how to talk to your child about vaping.
