French as a Second Language
What Is French Immersion?
French Immersion is a program designed for English-speaking families. Students learn in French, using the language throughout the school day to build strong listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
No previous knowledge of French is required for students or parents.
Our experienced educators support students every step of the way, ensuring they feel successful as they learn a new language naturally through everyday learning.
Why Choose French Immersion?
Learning in French offers many lifelong benefits. French Immersion students often develop:
- Strong communication and literacy skills
- Enhanced problem-solving and critical thinking
- Greater confidence and adaptability
- An appreciation for language, culture, and diversity
- A strong foundation for opportunities in a bilingual country
- DSB1 provides Core French or French Immersion programming beginning in Kindergarten. This early introduction to learning a second language builds a strong foundation and sets our students up for success in our bilingual regional context and beyond.
Support for Families
You do not need to speak French to support your child in French Immersion.
- School communications to families are provided in English
- Staff are always available to answer questions and provide guidance
- We partner with families to support student success and well-being
Our goal is to ensure every family feels informed, welcomed, and confident.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
French Immersion learning doesn’t stop at the school doors. Students are encouraged to explore French in fun, meaningful ways, such as:
- Listening to music or watching age-appropriate French media
- Playing games that reinforce vocabulary and communication
- Participating in cultural activities and celebrations
As students continue their French learning journey in later years, opportunities such as the DELF (Diplôme d’études en langue française), an internationally recognized French language certification, may be available.
