Timmins High Student Selected for Prestigious Shad Canada Program

For most students, summer is a time to relax. But for one Timmins High & Vocational School student, this summer is all about taking the first big steps toward a future in science and engineering.

Driven by a lifelong curiosity about how things work, Audrey has earned a spot at Shad Canada at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, followed by a trip to the Advanced NASA Space Camp in Alabama.

From an early age, Audrey truly enjoyed math and science. "I’ve always been into science and math. I like how there's usually one solution," she said, remembering how much she loved activities such as building popsicle-stick bridges in elementary school. "I’ve always just been curious about how things work and being able to apply what I learned in the classroom to real life."

That love for hands-on problem-solving is exactly what is drawing her toward a career in engineering.
This July, Audrey will spend a month living on a university campus for Shad Canada, a top-tier summer program focused on science, technology, and entrepreneurship. Reflecting her hard work and potential, the student also received a full Indigenous scholarship to attend the program.

While the classes and science labs will be challenging, the student is excited about the personal journey; Meeting and working with other students who share the same passions, stepping out of her comfort zone, and developing new skills.

The excitement doesn't end in Thunder Bay. In August, Audrey will travel to Huntsville, Alabama, for the Advanced NASA Space Camp. This will be her second time attending, after winning a highly competitive scholarship to go last year. With a summer full of university lectures, hands-on projects, and space simulations, Audrey is well on her way to achieving big things!
