TH&VS Hosts Ceremony for White Ribbon Day

December 07, 2018

On December 6th, 2018,  Timmins High and Vocational School (TH&VS), in collaboration with the Ontario Secondary School Teacher's Federation (OSSTF), hosted a ceremony to commemorate the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women today.  This day, also known as White Ribbon Day, is observed across Canada.

The ceremony focused on remembering the 14 women who lost their lives at l'Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal on this day, in 1989.  The health class students who lead the event were proud to share the message that we all play a collective role to ending gender-based violence.  This message of social justice and action is echoed in schools and communities across Canada today.

"It is our sincere hope that our remembrance will bring meaning to this senseless act. Violence and discrimination in any form is simply unacceptable in a society that respects all of its citizens, with kindness and caring serving as a focal point of unity," said J.P. Désilet, OSSTF District President.   Lesleigh Dye, Director of Education adds, "It was an honour and privilege to attend the ceremony and hear the message of remembrance and action from the students.  We are proud to  have partnered with the OSSTF for this important event."
