Orange Shirt Day is being honoured across Canada on September 30, 2020.

This important day provides an opportunity to continue the conversation about Canada's residential school system and the lasting impacts we see today.

District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1) is committed to reconciliation through the 94 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

On Orange Shirt Day, we honour the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada and learn more about the history of those schools.

The “orange shirt” in Orange Shirt Day refers to the new shirt that Phyllis Webstad was given to her by her grandmother for her first day of school at St. Joseph’s Mission residential school in British Columbia. When Phyllis got to school, they took away her clothes, including her new shirt. It was never returned.

Orange Shirt Day highlights the importance that every child matters, each and every day.

Schools across DSB1 will be honouring Orange Shirt Day on September 30, 2020.
