Update on our Plan to Re-open Schools

June 18, 2020

An update on our plan to re-open schools.png

Since the mandatory school closures across Ontario on March 13, District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1) has been exploring how to safely and responsibly re-open our schools.

Although the Ministry of Education has said that students will return to the classroom in September, a formal announcement on the re-opening of Ontario schools has not yet been made.  We will communicate with families further once that announcement has been made.

We thank the students, families and staff who have provided input for our re-opening plan through an online survey.  Results from this survey will be shared in early July.

We continue to work with the Ministry of Education, the Porcupine Health Unit and the Timiskaming Health Unit to create a draft plan to re-open our schools.  We will provide engagement opportunities for families to provide input on this plan this summer.  The final plan will be shared with you prior to our schools re-opening so you can make an informed decision about sending your child(ren) to school.

We are preparing for three possible scenarios for the 2020-2021 school year.  We may shift between these scenarios based on national, provincial and local trends.

  1. Face-to-face all-day learning for all students (this is unlikely in the fall)
  2. Adaptive learning model (this could include staggered days to respect physical distancing and gathering guidelines)
  3. Educator-led distance learning

We want to reassure you that the safety and well-being of students, families and staff are our main priority.  We are putting resources in place to ensure a smooth transition for all students.

We look forward to sharing additional information with you as it becomes available.
