On October 30th, 2019, Detour Gold hosted an Experiential Learning Opportunity for students from Kapuskasing District High School and Kirkland Lake District Composite School. Students visited the Detour Lake mine which is located approximately two hours North East of Cochrane.
Students participated in presentations by Detour Geologists, Environmental Monitors, Production and Shop Supervisors.
Students toured various locations on the property including the main camp, dispatch, repair shop and main pit as well as the water reservoir. As well, students learned about gold production, reclaiming the land and the life cycle of the mine. During their tour, employment opportunities and training/certifications were discussed for students in the apprenticeship, college, university and workplace pathways.
Detour Lake is the second largest gold mine in Canada and employs over a thousand people from across Canada. Their commitment to safety and quality of life for the employees who spend up to two weeks at a time on site was evident in the variety of recreational and cultural activities offered.
