DSB ONE Schools Participate in Hour of Code

August 23, 2017

District School Board Ontario North East is proud to be taking part in the Hour of Code. The Hour of Code is being held during Computer Science Education Week which runs from December 5th- 11th, 2016.

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify “code”, to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science and computational thinking, beginning with an hour of coding activities but expanding well beyond that to community events.

“The majority of our schools are participating in coding activities throughout the week,” says Director of Education, Linda Knight. “Robotics, coding, and technology start in Kindergarten in our schools. In the primary years, students use Coding Caterpillars, KIBOs, BeeBots and iPad technology to explore and build the basic knowledge and understanding of coding and computational thinking. As students progress through elementary and secondary school, they are introduced to different tools to increase their skills. Dash and Dot, Sphero’s, Lego WeDo, 3D Printers, Vex Robots and other tools are engaging and challenging, and incorporate traditional learning as well as 21st Century Competencies that our students will need in order to be successful in their future endeavors.”

“We are heavily invested in the 1:1 iPad program from Grades 3 to 11. We want our students to be on the cutting edge of technology so they are better equipped for the future, but we also want to insure they are using the technology wisely and effectively,” adds Knight. “Through technology, they are solving the problems of today and of the future. We are growing the leaders of tomorrow!” Contact your local public school to find out what they are doing to mark Computer Science Education Week.
