On May 14th and 15th, the Elementary Curriculum Team hosted a Critical Literacy Symposium at the Elk Lake Eco Resource Centre. Throughout the two day symposium, educators investigated the connections between the social studies curriculum and critical literacy, analyzed student assessments, and refined the construction of student tasks. Professional Learning centered around topics related to Indigenous perspectives. Lisa Innes, Board Indigenous Lead, orchestrated the KAIROS Blanket Exercise, which provided a meaningful understanding of our shared history. Rebecca Larocque, grade 4 teacher, showcased the critical literacy inquiry that students in her classroom investigated and participants were treated to a Canvas and Coffee night hosted by Temagami teacher, Kate Shaw. Educators reflected that throughout the symposium, a community of learners was created.
