District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1) Student Senate comprises three students from each secondary school, one of whom identifies as Indigenous.
The Senate elected two Student Trustees and one Indigenous Student Trustee to represent them at the board table next year. A motion was passed at the Board meeting on Tuesday, May 4, 2021, to support the results of the selection process.
We are thrilled to welcome MacKenzie Innes from Timmins High and Vocational School (Indigenous Trustee, one-year term), Josie Michaud from Iroquois Falls Secondary School (two-year term) and Lily Graydon from Timiskaming District Secondary School (one-year term).
"We are so proud of the leadership demonstrated by the 2020-2021 Student Senate and Student Trustees. They worked hard to organize this election virtually to ensure representation for the upcoming school year. The Board of Trustees looks forward to working with the newly elected Student Trustees starting in September" said Bob Brush, Board Chair.
We extend a heartfelt congratulations to Lily Graydon who was recently elected as the Policy Coordinator for the Ontario Student Trustees' Association's (OSTA-AECO) 2021-2022 Executive Council.
The selection process for the Student Trustees was developed to ensure one of the students would play a transitional role by staying on as a Trustee for two consecutive years. This will provide consistency in our practices and support the new Student Trustees in the following school year. The selection process also ensured representation from different regions and for our students who identify as Indigenous.
DSB1 would like to thank all 2020-2021 Student Senators as well as our three outgoing Student Trustees: Jamal Gagnon (Indigenous Trustee), Rowan Glover and Ethan Hurtubise.
