Yes! We are actively seeking candidates for casual and supply positions.  We also often have part-time permanent positions available.

No, it is not necessary to be on the Occasional Roster to apply for a Long-Term Occasional position or a Permanent Contract position. Adherence to local collective agreement language can affect the short-listing of applicants for certain positions.

Interviews may be conducted in person or virtually. You will be contacted by telephone or email confirming the date, time and location of the interview. 

Virtual Interview

  • Candidates will be provided with a link to a Microsoft Team meeting.
  • Please ensure you are able to access Microsoft Teams through video and audio prior to your interview.  If you cannot access Microsoft Teams, please inform the person who scheduled the interview with you immediately. 
  • At the time of your scheduled interview, members of the interview panel will greet you and introduce themselves.
  • The interview panel will happily repeat questions or provide clarification if requested.
  • There will be an opportunity for candidates to ask questions regarding the position at the end of the interview.
  • Candidates will then be informed of the next steps and applicable timelines.
 
In-person interview
 
  • Arrive early and sign in at the main reception of the school where the interview is being conducted.
  • The receptionist will direct you to a designated area to be seated.
  • A member of the interview team will greet you and accompany you to the meeting room.
  • Introductions will be made; however, handshaking is not necessary.
  • A written copy of the questions will be made available for your reference.
  • If applicable, provide one hard copy of any documentation you were asked to bring to the interview.
  • There will be an opportunity for candidates to ask questions regarding the position at the end of the interview.
  • Candidates will then be informed of the next steps and applicable timelines.           
 
Interview feedback
 
  • The successful applicant(s) will be contacted by a member of the hiring team.
  • An Offer of Employment letter and additional documentation will be sent to the prospective employee(s).
  • Unsuccessful candidates will receive an email advising they were not successful

Examples of accommodations which can be provided during the recruitment process include:

  • use of alternate setting

  • preference of online interviews for all candidates
  • accessibility within the building (e.g. elevator, automatic door openers, washrooms etc.)

Consider volunteering in some local schools on a regular basis. This will allow you to demonstrate, and build on, your skills while connecting with others in the profession. 

Consider asking the interview panel for feedback about your application and interview to prepare for future applications.

Prior to commencement of employment, all new employees must submit an Interim Offence Declaration Form, provided by the Human Resources Department. 

 

Within 30 days of employment, all new employees, volunteers, service providers, individuals requiring a placement for professional certification and others (the “applicant”), aged 18 or older are required to provide a Vulnerable Sector Check that is satisfactory to the board. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the above conditions are met. Any cost related to obtaining the Vulnerable Sector Check is the sole responsibility of the applicant.

 

The Vulnerable Sector Check must meet all the conditions outlined below:

  • Must have been completed by a police service within the preceding six months.
  • Searches completed by any private company or organization other than a police service will not be accepted.
  • Should the applicant submit a Vulnerable Sector Check showing evidence of a police record, confirmation of their duties will be postponed pending a review of the information. A police record will not necessarily disqualify the applicant. DSB1 reserves the right that the applicant to provide additional information regarding any police contact disclosed on the Vulnerable Sector Check. The final decision will be made by the Manager of Human Resources.

 

Required qualifications are listed on each individual posting. 

Qualified teachers must be in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers. For further information on the application process with the Ontario College of Teachers contact Membership Services at www.oct.ca or toll free at +1 888 534-2222.

Unqualified teachers should have a post-secondary diploma or degree. Experience with school-aged children is also an asset.

Support Staff must have a high school diploma. A specific post-secondary diploma or degree may be required for some positions.

Custodial Staff  A high school diploma is an asset. Experience and certification are required for Maintenance positions.

You can still apply for positions outside of your areas of qualifications. For example, you can teach a course if you and DSB1 mutually agree that you have the knowledge and experience to do so. 

Newly hired teachers will participate in the New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP) funded through the Ministry of Education.

Orientation specific to positions is provided to all employees.

DSB1 offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes extended health, dental, life insurance, long-term disability, and a pension plan.  The Employee Life & Health Trust (ELHT) provides teachers with Extended Health, Dental and Life Insurance.  Long Term Disability and Teachers Pension Plan are also provided at the employee’s cost.  A summary of eligible benefits will be provided at the time of hire.

Salary is dependent on the number of years teaching experience you bring with you from another school board.  It also depends on your certification rating from the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF).

Qualifications Evaluation Council of Ontario (QECO).  New graduates are required to apply to QECO for evaluation.  Visit the website at www.qeco.on.ca for application forms and further information.
